Types of Kiln Furniture

Shelves: Kiln shelves are flat, rigid surfaces made of materials such as cordierite, silicon carbide, or mullite. They provide a stable base for stacking pottery or other items in the kiln.

Posts and stilts: Posts are vertical supports, often cylindrical or square in shape, used to create multiple layers of kiln shelves. Stilts are shorter supports with prongs or pins on top, used to elevate and separate individual pieces during firing to prevent them from sticking together.

Batts: Batts are large, flat surfaces typically made of dense refractory materials like cordierite or silicon carbide. They are used as the bottom layer in the kiln to support shelves or other kiln furniture.

Saggers: Saggers are enclosed containers made of refractory materials that protect delicate or fragile items during firing. They are commonly used in the production of ceramics or when firing multiple small objects that need to be kept separate.

Props: Props are refractory supports used to hold kiln shelves or saggers in place and provide additional support to the kiln structure.

Tubes and pipes: Kiln furniture may also include tubes or pipes made of materials like silicon carbide or mullite. They can be used for various purposes, such as creating even heat distribution or acting as chimney vents.
